I've seen pictures/footage of people using the rear drive setup to power augers, large wood saws, grain mills, farm implements, etc. At the 1998 Vintage Power Wagon Rally, I saw Clint Dixon demonstrate the use of his truck pto setup for splitting logs.

For most such uses, there needs to be a pulley-driven governor on the engine, to give the engine a little more throttle when the external load is applied. I've heard these governors are also quite rare.
