Sit down with the gentleman and thank him for the truck and explane you going to 1) restore it to it's former glory 2) do a great overall maintainence/repaint to it so it runs and looks good or 3) do the basic mechanicals to it so it runs, brakes and stop the rust. Drive it to go to his house for the work you do over there, to show him you use and appreciate his gift. If you do 1 or 2 above take pictures and show him your progress as the project goes along.
