For us old timers, this was a common practice back before 12v systems. The voltage output from a "6-volt" generator that is operating properly is 7.35. You simply bump up the the voltage to 9 - 9.25 by adjusting the voltage at the regulator. 8v batteries are readily available at farm supply stores. Put in the battery, bump up the charging voltage, and enjoy a a hotter spark, faster turning starter, and brighter lights. Nothing has to be changed. My son's '41 WC 1/2 ton pickup (2WD) uses an 8v, internal regulator, single wire alternator. We have installed 6, 8, 12, and 24 volt internally regulated, single wire alternators in many of our Dodges. Any good auto electrical shop can build you one for about $65 - roughly the cost of a rebuilt alternator. Don't be surprised if you don't get a "core" refund for the old generators.
