Relationship b/t wheel size and gear ratio.

How did the wheel size and tire size differ between those civilian power wagons with 4.89 gears and those with the 5.? ratio and larger wheel size. Do the wheels look the same? Is the wheel bolt pattern the same? Can the larger wheels be put on and vice versa? What is the best way to verify original ratio and wheel size? Thanks for the help!
