im in central cal, and have a 57 panel. i also have a california replacement vin #. the original vin tag on the firewall was lost so the state issued a new one. i dont think they knew about the one stamped into the frame because i found it real easilly after scraping the dirt off the frame and it was right in veiw near the l.f. tire. if you have the tag on the body and it looks original i think thats what they would look at. try calling the chp, tell them what you want to do and see what they say. my 2 bits
