You could do that. But I really wouldn't look forward to draining 3/4 gallon gear oil, then taking one end of the driveshaft off and removing and replacing the 3rd member, all just to use 4WD. Not exactly "shift on the fly". That 3rd member weighs about 100 lbs. The real solution, I'm afraid, is lots of gear ratios in the transmission. Like, for instance, compensating for the taller gears of 4.89s by replacing the 4 spd with 1st = 6.40 or 6.68 with an Eaton/Fuller FS4205C with 8.05, 4.33, 2.51, 1.48, 1.00. Or for the 5.83s with a NP540 (6.06, 3.31, 1.81, 1.00, 0.821) or Clark 280VO (5.98, 3.50, 1.86, 1.00, 0.799) or even NV4500 (5.61, 3.04, 1.67, 1.00, 0.74).
