I used to swap carriers on Ford 9"ers, so we could race on the weekend and still get good mileage during the week. I got it down to about a 1/2 hour swap, and that means pulling tires as well as the axles. The M37 rear axle would not require the tires or hub be removed.

The front axle, if I read the manual correctly, has to be really taken apart to swap the pumpkin.

You could run with different gears in the back for on road mileage and speed in two wheel drive only, and use the lower gears when you need four wheel drive.
