I'd make them from mild steel about 50% larger dia.I'm not sure of the math but I think 50% thicker is 4 times as rigid.
But can't you just put it in 4low without locking hubs? then you don't need shifter mods.shoulodn't do any more harm than 2wd with hubs locked-the way they came from the factory for 30 yrs?
