Jim, I'm probably the most receint to work on a WM300 bed. The cross pieces are like a (C) channels of steel with hollow pipes where the bolts go through to strengthen the crossmember. I think there are four or five. I got'tem laying all over my garage floor to begin work grinding and painting them. The beds were always wood. Carriage bolts went through the wood, then through the crossmembers. I just took the tailgate off of a junker and noticed there were flat metal strips over each of the spaces between the wood bed slats.

Little not of interest. According to the "authorities," wood beds were always used on these work trucks because of the possiblity of farm animals being transported. They would slip and fall on metal beds, but not on wood...how about that....Alabama Al
