I assume you did not see the article I did about 5 years ago in PWA about this process ;)
Go to the shoe guy and ask for one made with a piece of 10-12 ounce leather. Keep it flexible (after he dyes it black) with periodic applications of neatsfoot oil, which you can buy on line.
