We used to rebuild mowers for NY State back in the late 50s that were exactly that.

The rear was extended out to about 9 feet wide, and the blade was made by a truck spring shop of about 4" wide stock. The last versions they bought had a 3 section blade like a brush hog, and a 2" thick disk looked like a manhole cover to maintain momentum.

They used those death machines to mow along the Parkway between Rochester & Hamlin Beach Park. They were towed by IH tractors, one tractor pulled a single to get close to and around the signs & obstructions and two other tractors pulled triples.

On dry ground those things could cut grass, but if the grass was wet they did nothing. The drivers had to plan their stops ahead of time too.
