This stuff happens all the time. The one real problem with a debit card is its attached to your checking account. At least with a credit card your credit may be tied up for a few days while they sort it out but if its a debit card they will clean out your cash and you have NO MONEY until the bank and or credit card company sorts it out. I had a co worker have this happen and a few of the places that had charges from his account simply said no they werent gonna refund anything. He was just out that $$$ for weeks. Sliding a debit card at WalMart and punching in your PIN I feel is safe but paying at a restaurant with your debit card where you sign here and lay your card down on the notebook and they take it all to the back room to run your card and pay for you meal is fraud waiting to happen. Setup a email at one of the free email services and you can purchase stuff online with a card # and verify things via the fake email. Get the transactions taken care of and then close the email account and thats it. Sure the authorities could track down the IP address and so forth but its probably only a few hundred dollars and they arent gonna waste time to do that.
