Matt: my M37 trucks rear differential did the exact same thing only ALL the ring gear bolts broke off. If you have one that's broken already I would replace them with a grade 8 3/8" NF bolt and just cut off one flat to allow them to nestle in by the gear. Then use a good grade 8 self locking nut with loctite to prevent anything coming loose. All the parts chewed up the carrier and the holes were all egg shaped so it was scrap. It happened when I just pulled away from a stoplight in town. The shaft was spinning but the truck didn't move. And when I applied the hand brake it kept rolling as well until I locked it into 4WD.
