There are researchers working on all different kinds of algae.
I suspect the ones most likely to be commercially viable will also provide food, as you suggest.
Right now, the only things we make biodiesel from are byproducts of food production. It's very hard to make a crop commercially viable when fuel is the only product. However, if we use byproducts of crops that are grown anyway for other purposes,it is easier to have an economical co-product.
