this has been educating about steel. I did some research and the blend of nickel, molybdenum, sulphur etc that makes up 8620 way predates 1960. maybe it was a certain findish that chnaged. Either way it would be nice to hear from your guy what his reasoning was. but the pre 1960 gears, blocks, crankshafts etc boviously have stood the test of time extremely well. So I would look for wear rather than part number if i had to pick through used diffs.
