Yes I would work better if it were privatized. All of these services were at one time. The double whammy to me is a public sector union. Think about the implication of that. Ever wonder how ten guys can stand around looking in a hole leaning on shovels and still have a job and a pension? If that were going on in the competitive market they would be under bid by a company with fewer workers who would actually work. Each working man could even be paid more if they weren't in the union forced to pace their output to the least productive member.

When I was a union member and shop steward I negotiated two tree year contracts., I learned allot about so called greed and avarice. I was threatened by other members to back of because I was making them look bad by increasing quality and production.
Personally I think greed can be a good thing. It is what drives the dynamo. Covetousness is the sin we are warned to avoid. What if we were to covet all of that security and the pension and free time a fire fighter has? Would we pander to get a job like that at the cost of our morality? What if it came with the title of Hero? Could we then justify going to the politicians to further entrench it at the expense of the public?
