Kaegi, come at it from the other end, may not be whats in the steel, but rather whats NOT in the steel! many years ago some things weren't checked for, some though were added as assists for differing things that needed to be done. sulfer is added as a alloy to increase machineablity, as is lead, neither do any good for the strengh or toughness of the steel but will make it machine nice. but there are things that years wasn't tested for. it very well could be some trace element of something removed from a heat of steel in 1970 that wasn't removed in 1940 because the spectograpghs of the forties did not show it!! now take this whole argument and reverse it to go the oppisite way. (jap swords from waayy back and the moly they contained, that no one knew about until just a few years ago) so it can go either way!! but the thing is steel has evolved to have way less inclusions, and less undesireable alloys. with steel, cleaner is better. anyone ever wonder why jap steel is inferior to American steel? Dave
