I have no facts to back this up, but back in the 70`s everybody in Austin that needed help with power
wagons went to a fellow by the name of John Minyard who was with Austin Machine and Grinding, he was an m37 unt. He put a 318, 435, hanging pedals in the spelunkers(Pete Sprouse´s) ff bus, who were as I recall running the 5.83s dually with 750s, needless to say it took em awhile to get to the caves in Mexico in it, it got there a little faster with the 318. Anyway he always used to say get the pumpkins, tc cases post 60 or so cuz the metal was more better, how true that is I dunno.

Make em fine splined on both ends with fine splined cups. Are their superior metals now, is their any room for the shaft to be thicker except for the splines that would lend more support to the spline. Maybe just make a stronger weak axle. Or as you say go centered, but they too may not be as strong as they could(should be)
