Having driven in places as far north as Canada and as far south as Chile, I'd say the only places where you would likely run into problems is at the border crossings.

A guy I know was in the business of taking school buses to Central America for resale. He was thrown into jail because he wouldn't pay what he perceived to be a bribe at one of the border crossings.

Mexico has a pretty detailed process to ensure that transiting vehicles don't remain in Mexico. This can be rather complicated the first time around.

I would say you might have a real problem transiting vehicles through Mexico that were not currently and permanently registered somewhere. The Mexican customs wanted copies of the official registration and ownership papers before allowing our vehicles out of the border area.

I've talked to RV people who said driving the major toll highways deep into Mexico is no problem. But, that was before the recent years with the drug problems.

My experience driving in Central and South America has been good except for driving in the major cities.

By the way, I spent a night at Jaco Beach while driving around Costa Rica. Nice place.
