That was probably true for many of the engineers and scientists. All the great nuclear physicists were Germans and they led the US on jet engine and rocket technology. I think the German love of things that work right led a lot of them to overlook the danger of the Nazi government simply because that government made things work. I've been very close to working on military designs but never quite crossed the line to things that needed a security clearance, and I noticed that the engineers who design the weapons systems are all about how cool the thing is and don't really give much thought to who will be deciding to kill whom with it. It's just a lot of fun to have a big budget to design some amazing thing that you'd never get to design in the civilian world.
