Personally, I would never ask any veteran of any war on either side to "forgive and forget". I wasn't there. I don't know what he went through. And more important, what feelings he has in his heart are his business and not mine.

All I know is that there's a point when holding grudges and avenging past wrongs takes away so much from one's own life that it's as if the enemy won. Even worse, scheming politicians are quick to re-open these old wounds in order to start new conflicts and gain more power for themselves. They don't even have to actually start a shooting war. All they have to do is convince "their" citizens that those bad people over there are out to get them.
