There are many places in the world where people are still killing each other to avenge what their ancestors did to each other centuries ago. Part of what made the US great was that we could say, "Okay, the war's over. Now let's get back to work." All things considered we even put the world's bloodiest civil war behind us pretty quickly.
It's good to remember history, and especially to remember not to do what led to historical disasters, which in the case of Germany and Japan was blind subservience to a dictator, plus an oil embargo, but any of us could have had the misfortune of being born in the wrong country at the wrong time, and then what would we do? None of us would have overthrown Hitler or Hirohito. I'm happy to bear a lifelong grudge against a man who tried to kill me, but not against a man whose grandfather's government ordered him to attack my grandfather's government.
