That's what I'd do Will. Epoxy, board with 100 now or maybe 120g, then fill any imperfections with polyester filler. Never use the red laquer based glaze...it needs to be 2 part & smell just like fiberglass. Like bond only way, way easier to sand. Then I'd epoxy again & now you're ready for a guide coat & wet sanding. Start with 320g & get finer...depending on your paint you intend to use. Don't be worried if you find imperfections while wet sanding...just fill with polyester filler & spot prime them with epoxy before painting.
Bodywork takes a long, long time...just don't be in a hurry & you'll be happier in the end! :)
Seriously, bodywork takes very little skill but a whole ton of patience. If you take your time, there's absolutely no reason you can't make it as nice as any professional shop...even the painting.
Have fun...that's the key otherwise you'll give up & paint before it's ready.
