Have you tried the acid method yourself? I find that by the time a radiator is clogged, the brass is usually starting to leak a little here and there too, so I'm leery of thinning it down any more with acid. Straight muriatic acid will eat the zinc out of brass so fast that it fizzes. My 1950s Cat D4 shop manual gives a recipe for a radiator cleaner. I'd have to go look it up, but it has something else in it besides just acid, and even then, with presumably thick and heavy radiators, they warned against using it too frequently or too long, and emphasized the need to neutralize it with a soda solution immediately afterward.

I'm sure the problems with clogging are directly related to the hardness of the water that one has to use. In hard-water areas it might be worth buying deionized water. It's no more than a dollar a gallon, and if you're not losing coolant, it can stay in for a long time.
