I used to go off roading in the Carrizo Wash area of Imperial county. This meant a trip over the mountains to get there. We went all year, even in 112° September days. A bad head gasket would sure overheat on the way home, up Desert Springs Grade/ Devils Canyon. There were 33 water barels in the side of the road then. I think they pulled about 2/3 of them since. It took a lot of beer to keep the driver from overheating.

But radiators do build up crud over the years. They can be flow tested easily in the vehicle, I reccomend that anybody with a problem do it:

Drain system, remove hoses. Block upper outlet with tape or plug, block lower outlet with hand or plug, and fill radiator to the top. Leave cap off, turn off hose for quietude, and remove lower 'cap'. Water should ba-whoosh out the bottom, like a commercial toilet, then stop. Little if any noise int he top. If it dribbles slow, like an old man peeing, and makes sucking noises in the radiator top, then your radiator has a bad prostate. No wait, wrong organism. It means the tubes are plugged with white mineral deposits. An acid bath will remove them, at risk of dissolving the brass tubes.
