Radiator Cap

Good morning to all. I hope everyone is enjoying their post-Thanksgiving weekend.

My '49 B-1-PW has the radiator with the 2-1/4" O.D. filler neck (I measured it to be sure). According to the PIF, a NAPA cap 7031400 or a Stant cap 10203 should be correct. I went to O'Reilly Auto Parts, and they cross-referenced it to a Murray 7003. I went to pick up the Murray part last night, and found that it does not match my old cap. It is hex-shaped instead of being circular like my old one, and worse yet, the two tangs are closer together than the ones on my old cap, enough so that I don't think it could be altered to fit. The guys double-checked their Murray number and said it does indeed cross-reference to both the Napa and the Stant part numbers that I gave them.

Does this make sense to anyone?

If it comes down to it, I may just replace the old, worn-out paper gasket in my old cap, but I was hoping to get a newer style cap with a rubber gasket. I have some fiber/paper gasket material I could use. I don't think there is enough clearance for rubber material of any reasonable thickness, as the existing cap already goes on with some effort. At least doing this would allow me to use my existing cap, which was long ago painted to match the rest of the body.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
