It doesn't matter what you give to your son, if he is not ready to accept the responiblity that goes with a firearm a lot of damage can be done even with a red rider. maturity, level headiness,and a willingness to follow the rules is paramount. some kids have it, some don't. my grandson is 14 has been shooting for 5 yrs very,very safe with a rifle or pistol, start his sister with a crosman pistol in a few months at five yrs old. many kids of 50-60 years ago were delighted to find a shiny new 22 under the tree at that age. just things to think about!
