I had a part I bought from VPW that was coated in cosmoline and wrapped in paper. The paper came off okay, but nothing would cut the cosmoline. I tried gasoline, kerosene, and brake cleaner. Finally, I called Vintage to ask what they recommended. I used what they told me to and the cosmoline just melted right off. It took no work at all. It was hot soapy water.
