On average, biodiesel contains about 8% less energy content per gallon. If you blend 20% biodiesel with conventional petroleum, that difference decreases to less than 2%. This doesn't necessarily mean 2% less fuel efficiency in your engine. To the contrary, biodiesel can burn more completely which means putting more of that energy to the ground instead of wasting it out the tailpipe. That's one of the reasons the recent diesel land speed record was set using B20. Biodiesel was faster than petroelum diesel in the same truck on the same day of speed trials.

Regardless of this cleaner, more efficient burning, and a significant cost savings at present market prices; the real reason it is worth it to buy biodiesel is because it is produced in America. In the long run, it doesn't cost you near as much when those dollars stay in your community as it cost to keep sending money overseas to import petroleum.
