You got it right when you say there are as many ways to tie down as there are tyers downers.
I started with straps and quickly changed to chains and binders. Then upgraded to ratchet binders. I use one chain/binder at each corner. I wrap the chain around the axle as close to the wheel as I can get. At the front, the chain nestles in at the base of the knuckle. Left front of truck, to left front of trailer, and so on. I see folks cross their chains, but I dont think its neccesary. I have pulled about 15,000 miles and have never had a problem.
