Fell off my dirt bike, severed the carpal tunnel nerve. To sew it back together, teh Dr. tried to give me a nerve block in my arm pit. Local anesthetic, injected close to a main nerve. He couldn't fund the rigth spot, but kept pumping in more Lidocaine. Finally gave me a general. Surgery went OK. I wake up in the recovery room with an itchy nose and a huge cast on my right hand. Muscle to raise arm to scratch nose are in the back. But the muscles to control the arm are in the arm, and still dead. So, raise the arm up, huge chunk of plaster comes falling down on my face. Bloody nose, fat lip. Damn that traitorous arm! The hand surgeon comes in later to check progress, and gets a puzzled look on his face. Says "I thought you were a motorcycle accident patient. You look like one of my fight patients". That was the first of seven surgeries to my hands and fingers.

Toughest thing with the cast was learning to wipe my ass left handed. I'm too big to use the up-the-center routine, I have to do the one-cheek-sneak.

40 years later, I'm pretty ambidextrous- neither hand works any good. My laundry looks like a drag strip...
