I argued with my parents to allow me to buy a car from about the age of 14 or even earlier. Dad finally told me when I saved a thousand bucks I could buy one. Of course working all day 6 days per week for him left no time to make any money.

We had a dairy and Dad did a lot of custom baling. I did the cutting and raking for 6 or 7 years which was very cool at first. After I got my license I was not so happy with 6 day daylight to past dark sitting on an AC D-14 mowing literally miles a day of hay. The summer of '65 @ 17 I wanted to go up the road and ask for a job driving truck. Dad would not let me, saying I was too young and couldn't get hired. A couple weeks later Connie was over and had a very private visit with Dad because he needed a driver for a couple weeks. It ended up being all summer long with slightly shorter hours and $1.50 an hour. The truck was a 2 ton '63 GMC with a steel sided dump bed. There were 2 of them and one of them now lives in another state, across a major river and about 2 miles down the road from me. =) Doesn't look too great now but there is no doubt it was one of them.

I saved the thousand so Dad had to let me get a car. I was 18 and it was now very early '66. We looked at several Chevy's I was interested in but somehow ended up at a State sale. Lo and behold we have '64 Dodge 330 post cars, 383/3 speed former OR State Patrol rigs. Dad wanted me to buy a '61 Dodge 4 door slant 6. Sorry, not at all interested. I won the bid on one and took it home. Was the fastest car in school which finally made me pretty cool. I had the car 7 years and had a 440/auto/3:54 Sure grip Dana 60 with a '67 RT bucket seat and console interior in it when sold. Still sorry I ever got rid of it.

Later on I had a really, really nice B5 '69 340/auto Swinger. Traded that on a new '73
W200 which I traded to Dad about 15 years ago for his '67 W200. I currently have another '69 340/4speed Swinger in the garage which has not run in close to 20 years. Someday I hope to be able to drive it again.
