My 97 Nissan UD1800 used to do the same thing, To make a long story short, the Inj pump timing was way off. You might want to check that. That color and thick smoke could be an indication that your INJ pump timing is retarded. My truck used to have a nasty half fuel smell to the smoke too. Your truck is mechanical pump, but mine was a electronic pump. After chasing our tails trying to get the electronic pump to work right, we switched it over to a older Mechanical pump, dialed in the timing, and now its fine. Just a thought.
