Sick. I can see being in a bad financial situation. But if you have assets you need to sell and downsize before you go onto public assistance. Public assistance should be the last resort and be short lived. The goal of any public assistance shoud be short term and focused on getting the person productive and off pubic assistance.
There is a case for public assistance for the totally disabled mentally or physically. But there has been a lot of abuse in this area also.
