A small bottle jack is fine for tire changing, and can't be beat for storing compactly. Make sure it's short enough to fit under the axle WHEN THE TIRE IS FLAT, and extends tall enough to lift the tire off the ground WHEN IT'S FULL OF AIR (found out the hard way on both of those). If more rugged conditions are likely to be encountered, a "farm jack" can't be beat for versatility. It has enough range that you can use it as a bumper jack and get the tires out of a mud hole far enough to throw rocks or logs in under them.
