I cut off the bolts and removed the pan. Much "gravel" of broken metal inside, none particularly identifiable except for the remains of a piston ring. All rods are connected to the crank, but #1 piston appears to be missing. So I guess technically it "threw a piston" rather than "threw a rod". Not clear yet how the coolant got into the pan. Will try turning the flywheel again after removing jammed pieces. Will pull the main bearing caps if need be. Somehow I should be able to get the crank to turn.

Still need to know how to get the timing cover off, though.
