I used a marine spar varnish I dont remember the brand but I got it at a well stock marine staore at my local marina. I remember it was expensive for a quart, I did seven coats steel wooling after each and it turned out great. I made a jig so I could do both side at a time and it saved alot of time and the jig only took about a half hour to put together. I will search my garage in the morning for the name of the spar varnish but call your local marine shop and ask for it. hope this helps.
