Do this test:

Pull the center wire out of the distributor cap. Leave the other end hooked to the coil. Hold the bare end about 1/4 inch from any good ground on the engine (a bolt head, etc)

Have a helper turn on the ignition key and activate the starter. The engine won't start, so don't worry.If the ignition system is working OK, you should see the spark jumping the 1/4" gap consistently while your friend cranks the starter. This simple test will tell you if the problem is or isn't ignition related. Don't buy a bunch of parts if the problem is elsewhere.
