You say it gives a kick, enough to disengage the starter and that's when you normally release the key to the run position. I suggest that is when the power to the coil. Ignition switch or more likely ballast resistor. You can test by holding the key in start position after it fires (not for long) if it keeps running when in start position you know it has to be one of these 2.
