If you can't get it to run for a few seconds by pouring gas down the carb, then it sounds like an electrical problem to me. Even if you pour enough gas in to flood it, if you crank it enough it should eventually fire up and run for a few seconds, not just enough to kick the starter out. Divide and conquer is the key to troubleshooting electrical problems and the best place to start dividing the ignition system is between the high voltage and low voltage end. Start by making sure the coil has 12 volts to it both before you start cranking and after it's given its one pop and quit.
