Like Ken says, fold it flat and remove to water affected pieces. Like Dodge Boys say, a canvas cover can beat up your paint work. You could leave it all as designed and not exceed the M37 speed limit. Given your expertise with woodwork, what about a removable canvas covered frame to go over it without actually touching it? Could attach to trailer or bumpers.
