because the pumpkin (third member) hump in the middle of a centered rear axle under compression would have hit the tail shaft on the rear PTO under. Thunk! By using an offset rear axle, the engineers kept the pumpkin hump safely away from the tail shaft.

You can put a PW (model 200) 2 speed transfer case in your WC 3/4 ton with a yoke on the parking brake drum for the propeller shaft to your WC centered rear axle. But why not get even more creative and use a modern NP 201 or 205 t/c? Then you can run a centered rear axle and use the PTO on the t/c to operate the front winch. That frees you from having to use a transmission with a driver side PTO trap door, meaning you can then install a nice NP 420, 435 or NP 445 with the correct bellhousing (don't ask me which one).
