overhauled engine noisy

I have a 1945 218 Dodge in a 1/2T WC (not power wagon- sorry!). A shop tanked the block, worked the valves, put in cam bearings, surfaced the block & head. I put in new timing chain & sprockets, new rod & main bearings, new rings. I have a noise that sounds like really loud tappets, but I and several other amateur mechanics have checked and rechecked the clearance (hot). pulling off any plug wire slows engine but does not affect the noise.
