Yes, Budd is a wheel manufacturer, but the generic term Budd wheel refers to the style of wheel that it is. The other common generic style of wheel is a Dayton, which is completely different from the Budd style. The simplest way I know to explain the difference is that the Budd wheel has a center and the Dayton wheel does not. The Dayton style wheel is what you see on most school buses, mobile homes, and a lot of older heavy-duty trucks. The wheel center is actually part of the axle/hub assembly and usually has five spokes. The Dayton wheel looks like a giant donut and slides onto the hub spokes. There are some clips that go onto the studs and then the lug nuts hold all that together. The Budd style wheels are what is found on flat fender PW's as well as most new trucks and many others. The Budd style wheels are generally considered safer and superior to the Dayton style.
