I'd be inclined to say the needle valve is sticking. And yes it could be caused by contaminated fuel. Best bet would be to clean the needle valve/seat and inspect very closely. If it's worn, then replace with a new one. Would be a good time to overhaul carb at this time and install a new in line gas filter. Be sure and install it away from the exhaust manifold as it will conduct heat and these old rigs are notorious for vapor locking all by themselves without adding to the problem. A good place for the filter is inside the frame rail. Good luck, let us all know what the outcome was.
