Tips on adjusting valves on a Poly 318?

I'm about to get my hands into the 318 Poly in my '63 W200 to check the valve adjustment.
Probably been many years since those valve covers have been taken off, let alone anything adjusted.

I'd like to be able to check/adjust it with the engine not running. Shouldn't be a problem, but I'm curious.....should the engine be at TDC or ??? when I adjust each lifter so there's no play in the pushrod?

Sorry if I sound stupid, but it's been too many years since I worked on a solid lifter V8, and my memory ain't what it used to be.
