Forget shimming the bearings. That's a very outdated concept. Yes, some folks got away with it. But it distorts the bearing from round to an oval at best.

I frankly would not worry about it, and would run a straight 40 weight in summer and maybe 20-40 in winter.

You can replace the bearings in the truck. It is not an easy job, but it can be done. A tool is used that fits into the oil passage in the crank, and as the crank is rotated it "wipes" or chases the upper bearing out. then you use it to push the upper bearing into place. I doubt such a tool is available any more, but it could be made rather simply.

My 1941 WC manual shows such a tool in use on a 217 cu in engine. If you want to try to replace the bearings w/o pulling the engine, drop me an email and I'll send you photocopies.
