How come you never hear or read of an electric engine ?
I was taught that if it was internal combustion , it is an engine and if it ran use AC or DC electricity it was a motor. The reason two different words were used was to differenciate between the two type powering devices.
Was it just a pet pieve of some old men without fact or reason or have many been incorrectly interchanging the two over the years without the knowledge they were doing so ? Still, if this is not a truth then why, does no one ever use the term engine to describe an electric motor as in electric engine ? This may seem trivial but the thought crossed my mind when I saw two different terms used for the diesel power plant on this post, but I have noticed that many will correct others about other trivial errors on this forum and seem to feel justified in doing so. Can anyone can shed some light on these two words and why one seems to be interchangable but the other is not ?
