It's easy enough to do wet and dry compression test. Since the spark plug hole isn't right over the piston, be sure to use an oil can that can squirt the oil right onto the piston. Check each cylinder dry and then after squirting a good shot of oil into it. If the oil picks the compression up, it's definitely a ring problem. If not, it's probably a stuck or burned valve. Valves can be pretty leaky and the engine will still sound okay so long as there's enough compression for the cylinder to fire. I've never had any luck with magic goop, but maybe you will. J. C. Whitney used to sell little pills of some sort of compressed powder that would "rebuild" your engine if you dropped them into the spark plug holes. Might just be stuck rings and driving it a while will free them up. You don't really have anything to lose by giving it some time and seeing what happens. If something's worn out, it's already worn out, and wearing it out a little more won't cost any more to fix.
