No, you can't run oil in the current sytems, the rubber isn't made for it.

And I didn't think that was the question. I thought the question was along the lines of "Why don't the manufacturers change over?"

So far as viscoxity changes, the sections that get hot are at the far end of the system. Viscosity after it's gone thought the plumbing and valving would be a minor point. And other oil based systems get hot as heck too, even engine oil.

But hmmm, think how simple a power boosted system could be. Just tee into the power steering lines, with a valve like on a back hoe. Step on the valve, 1,000 psi to the wheel cylinders. No hydraboost, no master cylinder.
